We have a small online retail shop selling computer hardware and electronics and we would like to integrate our website with the distributors. This is a large project, but I will try to focus on the most important details and move along from there.
We use osCommerce for our website. We use Dathorn for hosting.
Currently we only have one distributor which uses an XML based integration. We would like to update our website by including integration with the following features:
Distributor Integration – We need a number of things to happen with our distributor automatically. This includes, but not limited to:
Inventory/price check on all products once per day
Inventory/price check on each product when added to cart
Freight quote when order is about to be placed
Automatic Order placement – The order first needs to go through fraud detection (see below) and if it passes, or reaches a certain threat threshold, the order can be placed automatically. If not, then the order must go through further verification processes before submitted (this must be done manually).
PayPal Integration – Orders paid with PayPal are not returning order status correctly, or they are not being updated in our database properly.
Products – We were in development of a product that was integrating with a piece of software called “Screen Scraper” to essentially fill our database with product information from our distributor website. Our coder ended up leaving, but we can get the code for completion.
Sales Tax – I think there might already be a module for this, but sales tax is not correctly calculated. Each state, even district, region down to the city has their own specific tax rates. We need to be able to charge the correct tax amount, and when the time comes create a tax report for sales tax filing.
Fraud Detection – We currently use Authorize.net as our credit card processor, but we feel that their anti-fraud services are inadequate. We would like to integrate with one of a number of different anti-fraud sites, send them order information via XML, and they send back a risk assessment rating. We need a control to specify which orders will be processed automatically and which orders need further verification.
PPC Advertising – Submit product feeds to a number of different websites including Pricegrabber.com, Nextag.com, Amazon.com, and also Google.com
Website Fixes – Add a “flag this product for errors” for each product page so that that errors can be fixed manually.
Returns – Returns are currently not reflected in the database, this needs to be fixed. Add a page for an RMA request where customers can select their order and the specific product they would like to return. Some products are non-refundable, and sometimes we require a 15% restocking fee, and sometimes we require the customer to pay shipping. This all depends on the item that was bought and how long it has been since the purchase date. Also need to update the database for how much the customer was refunded, if the product was returned, how much the refund was for, etc.
I have included the basic coding overview of how to make this work, and I can also send a sample code for freight estimation.
This needs to work with osCommerce and be able to update order status, order history seamlessly.

Accordingly to your specified requirements, it seems that completion of all updates and fixes will take approx. 2-2.5 months. We can offer you alternative option to develop the system with the same functionality from the beginning but using another framework, for example, Symfony (www.symfony-project.org). As experienced IT-professional you should know that development a quality and stable system from the initial is much easily and more producible, than redevelopment of bad-working one.
So, we propose you to follow the right way with almost the same expenses. Our preliminary estimation of the project from the beginning is 3 months ($10 000). But more accurate estimation we can do after receiving more detailed specification from you.
