Greetings, we are a non-profit corporation and we need a redesign and overhaul of our website, which you can see at www.settingcaptivesfree.com. You must be knowledgeable about what first-time visitors are looking for when visiting a website, and how to capture their attention and place a call for action. Our "call for action" is for them to sign up to one of our free courses.
We would encourage you to enroll in one of our courses to see how the process works (enrollment is free, just please put on your enrollment I am working with Mike Cleveland and testing the enrollment process) so that the mentor who gets your enrollment will understand.
Here are some things that need fixing, in addition to whatever you can find to clean up the site, streamline and automate all processes, etc:
- You need to generally looking over the entire website to give any and all thoughts and suggestions. This work can be broken up work and done in phases, if possible. The donation method needs to be fixed first as it is very cumbersome currently.
- There needs to be a general overhaul of the website to make it as self serve as possible, minimizing the need for new enrollees to email someone for help.
- We get an unusually high number of first-time computer users, so making processes and menu paths especially intuitive is critical.
-As mentioned above, donation process is our first priority; monthly contributors cannot update or change their credit card information. They need a very easy way to make this change themselves.
- Log in issues come in regularly. We have a way for users to look up a forgotten password, but if they have forgotten their username, too, they have to email someone. This all needs to be automated.
- Currently our site needs for users of the website to be on Internet Explorer. What could we do to make the site more compatible with more browsers? Please don't respond, "we'll make your site completely available on any browser" without first looking at our website and seeing all the forms in the courses. Again, this is best done by signing up for a free course and filling out a course day and submitting it.
- We need to consider any changes that might address spam. We need to have a script or something behind email addresses that makes them invisible to spiders, but leaves the email address looking normal and fully functional.
Here are some further thoughts, given to us by a friend:
HOMEPAGE:
- Weve got 3 places to enroll from the homepage, and each path gives different information (Click here to enroll; Online Courses; Our Courses) there should only be one path to eliminate confusion and to be sure the student is getting all relevant information
- Weve also got 3 places to login from the homepage (and students try to use a 4thsee below)
- SCF Filtered Internet Access should moved off the yellow menu bar; many students try to log into their courses from here perhaps that could go under Our Resources > Filters & Reporting Software?
- There are 2 menu bars on the homepage, with overlapping information: 2 for Courses, 2 for Resources, 2 which include testimonies
- I dont think having 2 menu bars on the homepage is a problem, as we have a large website with
lots of information, but lets put them next to each other and make them look connected, eliminate redundancies and keep related information together (I dont have all suggested changes to the menu paths written out/collected yet, but I will within the next few days).
- The homepage is prime real estateI think we should take a close look at whats there, for example,
o We need to look at this page through the eyes of those who come to it: brand new visitors (looking for general information on the ministry and courses), current students looking for other areas of the ministry (newsletters, events, resources, etc.); returning students perhaps (how to find their login information, do they still have a mentor, do they need to start over), mentors? (those investigating what is required to become a mentor; mentor resourcesPastor/Elder Approval Forms; who to contact for what (webservant or database); resources to provide to students. (I realize these arent specific suggestions, just a way to think about how to approach this)
o what purpose do the flags serve? They take up a lot of space, and not all of the flags have courses translated into those languages;
o I think we should have an announcements place, specifically for new visitors, sharing important information like the annual conference, new courses, new courses in print, SCF conferences, new translations, radio programs, etc.
The content and menu path changes are best left to a different document. In general, I think most of the information needed is already on the website; its a matter of making that information more obvious, I guess, whether its repeating it in different places or highlighting it somehow, as people are quick to email a question vs. looking for the answer. (But in some cases, we make them look too hard.)
